Evan Jenkin – Director of Music

Evan has been involved with Bel Canto Music since 1998 when he began the clarinet. Since then he has completed degrees in Music and Education at the Queensland University of Technology, majoring in conducting and woodwind teaching. Evan has toured internationally with the Logan Youth Music Exchange as principal clarinettist and tutor and has been guest conductor for various camps and workshops throughout Queensland.

Evan has previously worked within the Sunshine Coast region for both Education Queensland and Matthew Flinders Anglican College.  More recently, Evan has resided in London where he was the Head of Music at Holy Trinity Primary School. During this time, he directed ensembles and performed at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. He has played with the award winning Kew Wind Orchestra, a semi-professional ensemble who have performed live on the BBC.  

Evan is currently working alongside Mr Purtle & Mr Fodor at Park Ridge SHS. Park Ridge SHS is a leading music program with the recently launched Music Excellence program and regional winners of Education Queensland's Fanfare.

This is Evan’s fifteenth Bel Canto Camp as Musical Director. He is once again delighted to work with such passionate and enthusiastic students and teachers. 

Michael Purtle – Concert Bands, Stage Band, Brass Tutor

Michael Purtle graduated from QUT with a double degree in Music and Education in 2007.  Whilst there he was the Principal Trombone of the Big Band, Principal Trombone and Euphonium of the Wind Symphony and also conducted the Wind Symphony on occasions.  Since then he has been working as the Music Coordinator at Park Ridge SHS.  Michael has toured to Japan, England, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Solomon Islands with his music and currently plays with Brisbane XLCR Brass Band. Michael is the current conductor of Windsor Brass, the top B grade brass band in Brisbane.  Michael has been recognised by being nominated for a Pride of Australia medal for inspiration, receiving an ASH Inspirational Teaching Award under the auspices of NEiTA and also was named as the Logan West Leader’s My Favourite Teacher.  Michael’s extremely passionate about teaching music and hopes to inspire young students to take up music at every opportunity.

 

Michael Anderson - Guitar & Ukulele, Stage Band 

Michael Anderson is a professional guitarist and guitar teacher specialising in jazz, rock and pop. Michael has been teaching and performing professionally in Melbourne, Sydney and most recently Brisbane since the age of 18. Having completed his B.Mus in Improvisation on guitar at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts, Michael has taught guitar at various primary schools, high schools, music schools and taken on many private students for nearly 15 years.

Michael has worked as a guitarist on cruise ships around the world, performed numerous times on live national television as part of Channel 9's Australia's Got Talent and in 2014 was named a top ten finalist at the National Jazz Awards as part of the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Having recently relocated to Brisbane, Michael has very quickly forged a reputation as one of the most in demand guitarists and guitar teachers, with an unbridled passion for all things musical.

 

Andrea Garwell - Strings Specialist

While working in the Army as an Army Musician, Andrea graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Arts (Double Major Music) specialising in Double Bass & Cello in 2000. She then taught Double Bass and Cello in various Private Schools and returned to study a Graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching through USQ Toowoomba. Currently employed at various Education Queensland schools as a Strings Specialist, Andrea is regularly involved in instrumental music workshops and camps around the region. 

 

Patrick Morwitch - Percussion & Drum Kit Tutor

Patrick has completed his Bachelor of Music Technology at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He has played percussion and drum kit since he was a primary school student and teaches drums privately. He plays in a number of musical projects, notably including the Windsor brass band. 

 

Sarah Stricklen – Strings Specialist

Sarah Mole had the opportunity to attended Bel Canto on numerous occasions during her schooling years. She states that it has been a great pleasure to transition from a student to a teacher within the camp. Sarah studied at the University of Queensland where she completed her Bachelor of Music with honours majoring in performance for violin and has also completed her Graduate Diploma of Education. Sarah currently is employed as a Strings Specialist with Education Queensland.
